Abstract
Over the years, a variety of operating systems have been invented, each with their own set of characteristics and capabilities. Users' decisions on which operating system (OS) to install will be guided by a thorough understanding of the features and functionalities of such OSs. As a result, a thorough examination of the strengths and drawbacks of various operating systems is required in order to identify the appropriate operating system to install based on the intended use. This research compares the file systems, user friendliness, security threats, kernel type, reliability, compatibility, and cost of the Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. The results of a quantitative investigation of three of the most commonly used operating systems demonstrate that the most widely used operating system is the latest version of Windows, followed by Mac and Linux. This is because Windows is often inexpensive, compatible, user-friendly, and reasonably secure. According to the study, Macs are more secure and reliable than Windows and Linux, but they are also more expensive. End-users can customize Linux because it is open source. Finally, it was noted that each operating system has some advanced capabilities that are specific to that operating system and are unknown to many users. This study provides insight to guide end-users’ decisions about the operating systems that are best for them based on their purpose of usage.
